About Justin Gallivan
Justin was born in 1973 and grew up in the suburbs of Chicago.  Justin received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois in 1994, where he studied the self-assembly of discotic liquid crystals under the direction of Professor Gary Schuster.

Justin moved to Caltech to pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry under the direction of Dennis Dougherty. Justin’s Ph.D.  work spanned several areas, including studies of molecular neuroscience (with Henry Lester) and computational studies of the cation-π interaction.  CaPTURE, a program to identify cation-π interactions in protein structures, can be found here.

Justin stayed at Caltech as an NIH postdoc with Bob Grubbs and Dave Tirrell, where he developed a water-soluble olefin metathesis catalyst, and synthesized hybrid polymers comprised of genetically engineered proteins  and synthetic polymers.

Justin joined the Department of Chemistry at Emory University in 2002 as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2008.
